"If it were not for art, I would have killed myself a long time ago" -Kusama
Kusama experienced visual and aural hallucinations caused by rijin'sho (depersonalization syndrome). At the afge of ten she started painting polka dots, which later in her career became her trademark.
She staged events like body painting festivals, fashion shows and anti-war demonstrations. In which most included nudity. She never profited from her work but they were exhibited with artists such as Claes Oldenburg, Andy Worhol, and Jasper Johns. She expresses her obsession with repetition, patterns and accumulations in her work. She remarks herself as an 'obsessive artist', with her art expressing feminism, minimalism, surrealism, art burt, pop art and abstract expressionism.
